What are VMWares? In laymen’s’ terms, a VMware is a computer program or software, which is installed on existing software or a program that enables other programs to run. Sounds confusing? In the computer world, there’s hardware and software; whereas hardware refers to the machines and peripherals that are use by the end user in their daily computing needs, software means the programs that help them operate the machine.
An operating system, or OS, is considered as software, which when installed on a computer will make the machine operational. And there are many types of operating system out there, such as Microsoft Windows, MAC OS X and Linux among others.
A single operating system can be installed on a computer, while multiple operating systems can be installed for those with a more advanced level of computer literacy. They can be accessed through the start menu on a computer. Creating and accessing multiple operating systems on a single machine can be quite tedious and complex. Try to imagine using three or more operating systems in one computer; thus meaning you have to make three or more hard disc partitions to accommodate each OS individually.
VMWare solves this problem and eases the problem. VMWare is a program that accommodates or allows the installation of other operating systems in the current or active operating system without the hassles of going out from the current OS making partitions and complex startups in the computer.
Application services on the other hand are third party programs that can be installed and run on a specific platform or operating system. For example, not all third party programs can be run on different operating systems; a program created and run on Windows XP may not run on Windows 7, and programs for Linux cannot be run on Microsoft Windows. In this case, VMWares can assist. Once installed, they will enable the installation of several types of operating systems in the current system and machine, hence the end-user may access different programs run on different operating systems just by the click of a button, without having to restart the computer. Giving the flexibility and ease of use for end-users, especially for advance and power users is a big draw for choosing VMWares.
